It refers to the Employer Identification Number and is issued solely for tax administration purposes. It should not be used for other activities (e.g., auction due to tax lien, sale, lottery, etc.).

In your federal tax account, you can view the information from your most recently filed tax return right there.

This is the personal taxpayer identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but do not qualify for or are ineligible to obtain a Social Security Number.
